Vendor Spotlight: Oh Crumbs Bakery
I first experienced the work of Kitty Waters of Oh Crumbs Bakery when doing a group styled wedding session last spring. I was SO impressed with her work that I knew I had to meet her and work with her again. She had created this incredible geode cake that was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen. Kitty is one of the kindest people I know, and you can tell how much she enjoys what she does by her level of passion for it, and her incredible skills. I'm so glad I've gotten the chance to work with her multiple times now, and even happier that I now call her a friend!
Hi Kitty! Tell us a bit about yourself!
I’m Kitty Waters, owner of Oh Crumbs Bakery. I make customs cakes for extra special occasions. I specialize in making unique flavors and designs that reflect the client and my cakes are truly sugar art.
What led your to your craft, and how long have you been doing it?
I am a scientist who has a creative side, and I use my science in the kitchen and my creativity to make beautiful cakes. I started out making birthday cakes for my kids but as my reputation - and skills - progressed, I created a business in 2015.
Scientist turned Baker! That's so awesome and unique! What gets you the most excited now about being a baker?
I love my clients, especially when they challenge me to make something truly unique. In particular, the carved 3d cakes are really exciting.
Do you have anything specifically that you feel you specialize in that others may not?
I make cakes that people really remember, the kind that you hesitate to cut into because they’re so stunning. And then you taste them and you want seconds - or thirds. I also can cater to almost any dietary restrictions, and make the dessert really yummy for everyone!
(We can definitely testify to that! Her vegan and gluten free cupcakes are my favorite treat!!)
In your experience, what should brides and grooms be thinking about when looking for a baker?
Budget well in advance and book early.
Is there something that most brides/grooms often don't think about (or only do after their wedding has come and gone and have that "ah man!" moment) that you can educate them on now, regarding their cake and hiring a baker?
Cakes are centerpieces, just as a wedding dress and flowers are part of the overall mood. They are expensive because they are a once in a lifetime customized art piece. People remember when they have had bad cake, and when they have had really really good cake.
Who is your ideal client?
Creative, inventive, excited, foodie, and open-minded.
Do you have any advice you'd like to share about planning weddings in general?
When you’re planning your wedding, go with your gut - not with what someone else tells you you have to have. It’s your big day, nobody else’s.
We absolutely 100% agree with that!!
We'd love to hear more about you personally! Anything you'd care to share about yourself?
I married my high school sweetheart and had three kids within 5 years. I have two giant dogs, love anything about Sherlock Holmes, and speak French.
